Evan's Story

A Day in the Life

Every day, Avodah Corps Members work at their antipoverty nonprofit placements across our cities, serving on the ground with people in need, building skills for social change, and living together in a supportive community. Evan’s story provides a glimpse into the life of an Avodah Corps Member in Washington, DC.

10:30 a.m.

Time to get to work! Evan steps out of the bayit (house) in the Columbia Heights neighborhood to make his way to work at Build DC, which works to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities.

 11 a.m.

Evan settles into his desk to get down to planning. At Build Metro DC, he runs entrepreneurial programs for local high school students, and Job Shadow day is coming up. He speaks with parents of his students to make sure everyone is on board with the schedule.

12 p.m.

Meeting time. Evan steps into the conference room with his supervisor, Alyza (who is an Avodah alumna herself), to do some planning with one of Build DC’s local partners.

 1 p.m.

Three meals a day and strong relationships are a key ingredient to social change. Evan takes a break to eat lunch and connect with his colleagues.

2 p.m.

Evan and Alyza make their way down to the Columbia Heights Educational Campus to get ready to teach their afterschool programs.

3 p.m.

During academic help period, Evan works one-on-one with students, helping out with anything from homework to job applications.

4 p.m.

Class time! Evan is teaching about job interviewing skills today, and Build DC mentors have joined to help the students practice.

5 p.m.

School’s out. Time for Evan to join his fellow Corps Members for programming.

 6 p.m.

Evan manages to make it just in time. He and his fellow Corps Members listen to a panel discussion featuring local leaders involved in juvenile justice reform efforts.

7 p.m.

It’s important to process what happened during the panel, so Evan joins the other Corps Members to talk about what they heard.

8 p.m.

It’s been a long day, but a good one. Time to get back to the bayit and take it easy for a bit!
