What are your plans for next year?
In only a few weeks, I will begin my first year as a law student at George Washington Law School in Washington, DC!
How has AVODAH influenced your plans?
My AVODAH placement this year with the Capital Area Immigrants' Rights (CAIR) Coalition has solidified my interest in pursuing a legal career. I already started my academic journey studying the intricacies of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and performing basic legal analysis on numerous cases. At the same time, I gained practical skills working with clients, many Spanish-speaking only, in immigration detention. I am excited to use the law in the future to defend vulnerable populations, such as detained non-citizens facing deportation, and to work toward greater social change by helping shape our legal system.
What is one thing you learned this past year in AVODAH?
Living in a house of 10 people can be challenging, to say the least; however it has enabled me to engage in meaningful and difficult work. This experience has shown me the importance of a support network to come home to at the end of a long day. There were certainly days when I would return home from a visit to jail frustrated and unsure how to proceed. It was thanks to my supportive housemates that I was able to pick myself up and feel inspired once again. Arriving home, I would find a yummy home cooked (and certified-kosher vegetarian) meal waiting and several housemates eager and willing to listen with open ears and open arms. My housemates were experiencing similar feelings about their own work and talking with them made me feel better. Even though our group will disperse across the country, there is no doubt that each of us will continue social justice work in some manner. Through AVODAH, I have friends who I can call and who can call me when seeking understanding, motivation, and love.
